How to Get a USA Student Visa (F-1) from India: Step-by-Step Guide

Studying in the United States is a dream for thousands of Indian students every year — and the F-1 student visa is the document that makes it possible. The process has many steps, but each one is straightforward once you know what to expect. Here is the complete journey, in order.

1. Get admitted and receive your I-20

Before you can apply for a visa, you must be accepted by a US university or college that is approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Once you accept your admission offer and submit your financial documents, the school issues a Form I-20. This form is the foundation of your entire visa application — check that your name, date of birth and program details exactly match your passport.

2. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee

Next, pay the SEVIS fee online at fmjfee.com using the SEVIS ID printed on your I-20. Keep the payment receipt — you will need to show it at your interview. This fee funds the system that tracks international students in the US.

3. Complete the DS-160 form

The DS-160 is the online non-immigrant visa application. Fill it in carefully at the official Consular Electronic Application Center. You will upload a recent photograph that meets US visa specifications. After submitting, print the DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode — this is mandatory for the interview.

4. Pay the visa fee and book your appointments

Pay the Machine-Readable Visa (MRV) application fee, then schedule two appointments:

  • A Visa Application Centre (VAC) appointment for biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
  • A visa interview appointment at the US Consulate or Embassy (Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi or Kolkata).

Book early — interview slots fill up fast, especially for the Fall (August/September) intake.

5. Prepare your documents

Organise these before your interview day:

  • Valid passport (with at least six months validity beyond your stay)
  • Form I-20 (signed)
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • SEVIS fee and visa fee receipts
  • Interview appointment letter
  • Admission letter and academic transcripts / mark sheets
  • IELTS / TOEFL and GRE / GMAT scorecards
  • Proof of funds: bank statements, education loan sanction letter, scholarship letters

6. Ace the visa interview

The interview is short — often under three minutes — but decisive. The consular officer wants to confirm three things: that you are a genuine student, that you can fund your education, and that you intend to return to India after your studies. Answer honestly and confidently.

Tip: Be ready to clearly explain why you chose your university, your course, and how it fits your career plans back home. Vague answers are the most common reason for hesitation.

How early should you start?

Begin at least 6–8 months before your intake. You can apply for the F-1 visa up to 365 days before your program start date, and you may enter the US up to 30 days before it begins. Starting early gives you buffer for document delays and interview rescheduling.
