IELTS Preparation Tips: How to Score Band 7 and Above
The IELTS is the most widely accepted English test for studying abroad, and a Band 7 opens the door to top universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and beyond. The good news: IELTS rewards preparation and technique, not just vocabulary. Here is how to lift each section.
Understand the test format first
IELTS has four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Academic version is for university admission; the General Training version is usually for migration. Know which one you need before you start practising, because the Reading and Writing tasks differ.
Listening: train your ear daily
- Listen to English podcasts, BBC News and TED Talks every day to get used to different accents.
- Practise with full-length recordings — you only hear them once, just like the real test.
- Watch your spelling and singular/plural forms; a correct answer spelled wrong scores zero.
- Read the questions before the audio starts so you know what to listen for.
Reading: it's about strategy, not speed-reading
You have 60 minutes for three passages and 40 questions. Don't read every word. Use skimming to grasp the main idea and scanning to find specific information. Master the tricky question types — True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings catch most students out.
Tip: 'Not Given' means the passage simply does not mention it — don't use outside knowledge to guess.
Writing: structure wins marks
Task 1 (Academic) asks you to describe a chart or graph in 150+ words; Task 2 is a 250+ word essay. Examiners score you on Task Achievement, Coherence, Vocabulary and Grammar.
- Plan for 2–3 minutes before you write — a clear structure beats fancy words.
- Use linking phrases (however, furthermore, as a result) to show coherence.
- Always write a clear introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion in Task 2.
- Leave time to check grammar and word count; under-length answers are penalised.
Speaking: fluency over perfection
The Speaking test is a 11–14 minute face-to-face conversation in three parts. Examiners reward natural, extended answers — not one-word replies. Don't memorise speeches; they sound rehearsed and lower your score.
- Record yourself answering common topics (hometown, studies, hobbies) and review.
- Extend every answer with a reason or example — aim for 2–3 sentences minimum.
- Speak at a steady pace; it's fine to pause briefly to think.
- Practise with a partner or counsellor who can give honest feedback.
A simple 6-week study plan
- Weeks 1–2: Learn the format, take a diagnostic test, identify weak sections.
- Weeks 3–4: Focused practice on weak areas; build a vocabulary notebook.
- Week 5: Full-length timed mock tests, twice.
- Week 6: Review mistakes, polish Speaking and Writing, rest before test day.
